or Boosie Badazz, you’re probably wrongĪs a proud Black gay man who spent 30-plus years of my life navigating the emotional and psychological trauma inflicted by Black men, Boosie’s tweet wasn’t just homophobic, it was deeply hurtful. If ever you find yourself agreeing with T.I. To say that Boosie Badazz’s recent tweet calling Lil Nas X a “f**got,” and wishing that the 22-year-old music superstar commits suicide, is deeply triggering as a Black queer man, would be an understatement. This is the kind of self-policing and decision-making many LGBTQ people, particularly those who are Black, resort to as a means of social, and sometimes literal survival.

I was heading to a ‘straight’ social event at the time, and so I decided on my way to the car to drive back home across the street and quickly change out of my shorts and slip into something less obviously ‘gay’ so that I could avoid any other potential run-ins that would bring me attention or harm. Perhaps the shorts or the sway of my walk was too much, I thought to myself. I was dressed in a polo button up shirt, skinny fitted short-shorts and loafers.

I immediately turned my attention to what I was wearing. I started to investigate whether or not I did something to deserve such hate and rage. Thousands of posts of men kissing each other flooded Twitter over the October 3 and 4 weekend.Doing what many do when they are humiliated or a victim of verbal or physical abuse, I internalized it and blamed myself. The goal of Takei’s movement was to take back the hashtag and replace it with something positive, hopeful, and uniquely gay. Understanding of their true nation came quickly, in the wake of their weaponized intimidation efforts and violent actions. So when Proud Boys first popped-up on social media, the meaning was perceived to be related to homosexuality. “Pride” has become synonymous with the LGBT equality movement around the world. In England, the term “rent boy” refers to a type of male prostitute – usually young men who have sex with men. Trump: “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by! But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the left.”īut instead of hate-filled messages and White Supremacy propaganda, the hashtag has been trending with photos of celebration from gay men. The #ProudBoys saw a spike on Twitter after Trump’s implied endorsement on September 29, and the mention has been used for expanding recruitment.Ĭhris Wallace: “Are you willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down…” The organization has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The armed White insurgents known as Proud Boys have triggered violent incidents across the Pacific Northwest, in an attempt to suppress peaceful protesters supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

Gay men have taken to Twitter to reclaim the “proud” hashtag, following Donald Trump’s refusal to condemn White Supremacy during the presidential debate, along with signaling to an Alt-Right paramilitary group that they should “stand back and stand by.”
